On a site im developing I need to decide on a way of navigation. Using the PHP switch function or using a custom AJAX script. There pros and cons to each of these.

PHP:

Pros:
Reliable,
Cross-browser

Cons:
Slow and clunky
Unoriginal

AJAX:

Pros:
Fast,
Sleek and refreshing,

Cons:
Few browsers work AJAX the same way,
Need to refresh temp files if content updated,

Which would you guys reccomend? I think more people would be happy because php has less problems.

I see AJAX as "java that works".
Now when you are coming up with a concept or site, obviously your aim is to make it a pleasurable experience for all and at same time provide latest technology to your visitors and members.

Priority is to make it possible for all to access site and only if they can, then comes the features and latest technology.

Since Ajax has few of its downsides and browser glitches (not serious though), I would suggest you go with php coding. And if originality is the problem, you can always hire a coder to make you an original script for the purpose. So, once people can see site easily without problems, other features may be improved upon.

Many fall for AJAX but then they cut down their visitor database as well and it reminds me of Web2.0 where we all talk about democracy and user-centric approach.
