"The buzz surrounding Web 2.0 has investors eager to invest, but has others labeling it the new Internet bubble - "Bubble 2.0", - according to David Hornik of August Capital. But is Web 2.0 just another bubble?
Mercury News reported late last year that in the third quarter of 2005 alone, venture capitalists poured $394 million into 51 Internet companies that cater to individuals online, up from just $116 million in 17 companies during the same quarter two years ago (VentureOne data). While early Web 2.0 companies were simple in task, late application had showed major advanced in technologies used (such as Ajax, or Asynchronous Javascript and XML). So there is some level of performance. And VC funds continue to solicit every promising idea that presents itself. Here is a great article on the whole argument: http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/sil...y/13164800.htm So what do you think - is Web 2.0 a bubble, or a promising start, and an even stronger foundation toward the next generation of Internet (perhaps Web 3.0)? Best,

There is no way 2.0 is just a 'bubble'. With the strength that internet companies have today,(google, myspace, etc), it's most definitely a foundation for the futre.

This is indeed a great topic for debate and discussion.
Most important is to understand why Web 2.0 came into existence? The very bubble that led to emergence of Web2.0 will some day in future lead to emergence of Web3.0, for technology and development always progress and can not be contained. Something about the Web1.0 or Original web as i call it, was improved in Web2.0 and similarly improvements shall be made over Web2.0 in days to come. What would be basis for this improvement is vital point. It could be hype, it could be limitations in Web 2.0 or anything similar. The figure quoted above, do not indicate anything towards the hype or bubble, this is indeed a good start. Problem comes when good start is coverted into a hype. I am not sure about Web1.0 as to how it got the hype, but surely history is going to repeat itself. It may not be this time but in years to come, a bubble is bound to be created and Web3.0 is going to come. Thats how life has been, be it real or cyber one. ![]() |

It was basically decided when O'Reilly and MediaLive International came up with the concept of web2.0 that the web was more important than ever. Almost all important technology needs to stumble a little on it's way up the ladder. Large companies have come to realize that they can't stand by and let the technology of the web pass them by. So while web2.0 in itself may rise to web3.0 that doesn't mean it will take another stumble.
